Barış Manço - Hatırlasana - Remember

Hatırlasana  Remember

Hatırlasana Hani bana söz vermiştin Remember, you promised me
O akşam ayrılırken Döneceğim demiştin Leaving at that night you said you'd be back
Yıllar geçti Bekledim boş ümitlerle Years passed, I waited with desperate hope
Hatırlasana Hani bana söz vermiştin Remember, you promised me
O akşam ayrılırken Seviyorum demiştin Leaving at that night you said you loved me
Yıllar geçti Bekledim boş ümitlerle Years passed, I waited with desperate hope
Duydum ki bugün evleniyormuşsun I've heard you are getting married today
Artik başkasının oluyormuşsun Now you'll belong to someone else
Gücüm kalmadı dayanmaya I have no power to hold on any more
Ağlamak istiyorum I want to cry
Doya doya  Hıçkıra hıçkıra As much as I want, sobbing
Hatırlasana Böyle mi söz vermiştin Remember, is that what you promised me?
O akşam ayrılırken Seviyorum demiştin Leaving at that night you said you loved me
Yıllar geçti Bekledim yaşlı gözlerle Years passed, I waited with tears
Duydum ki bugün evleniyormuşsun I've heard you are getting married today
Artık başkasının oluyormuşsun Now you'll belong to someone else
Gücüm kalmadı dayanmaya I have no power to hold on any more
Ağlamak istiyorum  I want to cry
Doya doya Hıçkıra hıçkıra As much as I want, sobbing
Doya doya Hıçkıra hıçkıra As much as I want, sobbing

The song is not about love. More precisely, love is certainly present here, but the meaning of the thing is to express powerlessness. Powerlessness is the plot of the song. I don't know what inspired Manço to write like this. Almost certainly there was no such situation in his life (his life is well documented). He creates the world with his songs. And this is definitely a rather sad world, in which there is definitely no dominant smile, no matter what happens. I personally perceive this song as an argument against the pathos of modern psychology and modern remedies for depression (serotonin reuptake inhibitors). It is necessary to be sad, and when it becomes unbearable, weep and sob. Men, women, children, old people - all people.

Mancho resists stereotypes about strong macho men. There is no place for such patterns in his world. He generally mentions a lot about tears, but here it is the main theme. We must surrender to powerlessness, we must experience it to its full depth.

(True, in Turkish culture, the patterns are not quite the same as ours, in general, their people cry more often than ours).

By the way, it is very important that there is no mention of death (and in general there are many of his other songs about death). There is no way out of grief, powerlessness is total. But nevertheless there is a song, there is an expression

Please pay attention to the melody at the end of the refrain. Turkish words here:

Gücüm kalmadı – I have no power any more
Dayanmaya - to hold on
Ağlamak istiyorum – I want to cry
Doya doya – As much as I want
Hıçkıra hıçkıra – sobbing

So here in the melody for the first three words there is a high introductory tone. And on the words “I want to cry,” it resolves into a high, strongly emphasized tonic. This is the key center of the song. This is a song about tears

But the lines do not end, then there is “as much as I want, sobbing” and repetition. The melody has already gone further from the tonic, it goes down to the fifth step. The harmony at the end is tonic, but the melody does not end on the tonic, as if emphasizing the powerlessness even to finally complete the song

This is a very harmonious combination of words and music, it's just superbly done

The video is nowhere near as brilliant as the song. To be honest, it's better not to watch it at all, but only to listen.
